Lighting for Sport

 

  • Collaboration with University of Sheffield - Sports SET (Science, Engineering & Technology) Network & SportsPulse on various sports lighting projects

  • Lectures in Sports Lighting at University of Sheffield

  • Carrying out floodlighting surveys at grounds of Football League clubs

  • Collaboration with Sports Equipment Manufacturers on possible projects involving innovative sports equipment with a lighting connection

  • Collaboration with International Tennis Federation

  • Collaboration with Sport England and Badminton Association of England in respect of Technical Guidance Notes (TGN) for badminton court lighting

  • Secretary – Sports Vision Association – (2001-2003)

  • Liaison with CIBSE in respect of revision of CIBSE Lighting Guide 4: Sport (LG4).  Invited to join the Task Group looking into revision of the Guide. Contributed to revision on: Lighting for TV, Lighting for Partially sighted and visually impaired Sport, Lighting for Stadia and Lighting for: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Cycle Racing, Speedway and Tennis. LG4 revision published 2007- (ISBN 978-1-903287-78-1)

  • Development of mathematical expression for illuminance requirements for sports grounds - for incorporation into LG4 revision

  • In 2009 he was appointed Chair of CIE TC 5.26 ‘Guide for the Lighting of Sports Events for Colour TV and Film Systems’. TC (Technical Committee) 5.26 is an international committee comprising experts from throughout the world.

Dr. Smith has delivered many conference/seminar presentations including; -

  • 12th Commonwealth International Sport Conference – Manchester – 2002. Lighting for Sport

  • TST 2003 - International Tennis Federation Congress on Tennis Science and Technology -London - 2003. Shedding the Light on Tennis

  • CIBSE/Society of Light & Lighting - Sports Lighting Seminar - Lighting for Television Broadcasting - London – 2007 – at the launch of Lighting Guide 4: Sport (LG4) 

  • Lighting for the Televising of Sports Events - Society of Television Lighting and Design - London 2010
